Arts & Athletics
Please comment on your experience watching the play, RED, or the film, Brian's Song, or a musical performance like Allos Musica which performed Friday 15 November on campus. How is watching an artistic performance similar and dissimilar to watching an athletic performance? Does thinking about the comparisons make you more amenable to trying out a new artistic experience? Does it make you observe athletic performances differently? (You can use excerpts from your papers, but try to engage each other in conversation).
End of course reflection
Please comment on at least several if not all of these questions -- use separate posts if you like.
What have you learned in this course that surprised you?
Would you take another course in philosophy if money/time weren't major barriers?
Do you have an understanding of the philosophical dimensions of the study and critique of sport?
Have you developed an appreciation for the relevance of metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical questions in our daily lives?
Have you improved in your skills of analysis and critique, as well as in written and oral communication due to this course?

Coaching
* Do coaches have moral responsibilities to players? Do those responsibilities shift the older the player and more advanced the play?
* Are coaches guilty of indoctrination?
* Do coaches teach morals? Should they? Give examples of acceptable moral values and questionable ones. I'd answer by saying, for instance, that coaches ought to be teaching mutual respect and that would be manifested in post-game handshakes. Unacceptable values for me, would be a coach who teaches young children that winning at any cost is the most important thing.

Questions for discussion:
1. When does sport become unacceptably violent?
2. Are some sports the moral equivalent of a bad role model? (e.g., objections to legal cage fighting on the grounds that it is too morally problematic).

International rules for sports
(from Dexter)
I believe that sports are not singular in regards to a nation but sports govern international competition. In regards to the legalization of steroids, what would be international repercussions our athletes would face? Would the US be banned from international play for instance?
